After joining Chelsea last summer, the former Real Madrid striker started the season in prolific goal-scoring form. Morata rounded off 2017 with impressive stats: 13 goals in 28 game for both club and country.
However, his back problems began hindering him more and more. Morata tried to train and play through the pain, but it ended up significantly affecting his performance. 'Marca' even reported that he couldn't even drive for the excruciating pain.
Furthermore, his relationship with Antonio Conte wasn't the best. They knew each other from their days at Juventus but, little by little, the Italian stopped counting on Morata due to his fitness problems. Struggling to gain a regular starting spot, Morata hasn't had the easiest season with the 2016/17 Premier League champions.
Unfortunately for him, his tough season has affected his reputation with the Spain squad. In Julen Lopetegui's final 23-man squad, announced on Monday, Morata was one of the more notable absentees.
There were no complaints from the Spaniard though, who was one of the first to cheer on the side on social media after the squad was revealed.
