An experimental night for VAR at Wembley began with an early goal from the hosts disallowed, but it was not to end there. After Son broke the deadlock, he was awarded the chance to double his and his team's tally.
A long ball forward for Trippier saw him go down under a challenge from Done, who had his hand round the Spurs right-back's shoulder outside the box, and referee Tierney gave a foul...

There were huge jeers around Wembley as a minute or so passed. But Spurs fans stopped booing when Tierney, following VAR consultation, was told contact continued into the box and a penalty was given.
Son stepped up, stuttered, as many players do, and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. It seemed Tottenham were well and truly in control.
But the referee disallowed it, and booked Son, because of the South Korean's stop-start run-up. Tierney had his hand to his ear for a long while after that, too. Madness.

To add insult to injury, Rochdale equalised just moments later.
