The last time Real Madrid lost a Champions League final

1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016 and 2017. In each of these years Real Madrid battled their way to the Champions League final and claimed the corwn of Europe's best, defeating Juventus, Atletico Madrid (twice), Valencia and Bayer Levekusen.

Whilst the Spanish giants are considered experts in European finals, having won 12 of the 15 they have contested, they don't always emerge victorious, as Liverpool well know.

Until their clash back in 2009, the final of the Europena Cup in 1981 was the last time the two sides had met in European competition, with Alan Kennedy claiming the winner for the English side with just eight minutes to play.

That final fell within Liverpool's period of European domination, with them also claiming the title in 1977, 1978 and 1984. Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott, Kenny Dalglish, Sammy Lee, Graeme Souness, David Johnson, Kennedy, it is fair to say that it was a very strong side form back to front and lead by the legendary Bob Paisley, who until Carlo Ancelotti matched him in 2014 was the only manager to have own three European Cups. 

The defeat in '81 still rankles with many Madrid fans, who insist that Liverpool scored with their only chance of the game and one that came from a Real Madrid error at that.

Rafael Garcia Cortes failed to deal with a throw-in, with full-back Kennedy getting in to lash past Augustin Rodriguez form a narrow angle to claim his side victory.

"When I got back to Madrid I threw the tape I had of the game recorded out of the window," Garcia Cortes told 'GOAL' in 2014. Since then, no side has got the better of Real Madrid in a European final, though that stat will be put to the test once again in Kiev.
