Pierre van Hooijdonk – Nottingham Forest
The striker asked for a transfer but Forest refused so he didn't return to the team until November. In order to stay fit, he trained with NAC Breda. When he eventually returned, he celebrated goals on his own with teammates choosing to ignore him.
Dimitri Payet – West Ham
With West Ham battling relegation, the French playmaker said he would 'never kick a ball again for West Ham'. The club owners almost made an example of him by forcing him to stay, but he returned to former club Marseille for £25 million.
Raheem Sterling – Liverpool
The winger did not go on Liverpool's pre-season tour claiming he was 'too ill' and turned down contract renewal offers stating he was not a 'money-grabbing 20-year old'. He joined Man City for a record £49 million fee for an English footballer.
Carlos Tevez – Manchester City
He refused to warm up when ordered by Roberto Mancini and was suspended for two weeks and fined £500,000. He went back to Argentina before returning for the end of the season.
Dimitar Berbatov – Tottenham
The centre-forward also refused to come on as a substitute with Martin Jol in charge. He eventually sealed a £30.75m switch to Manchester United where he won two Premier League titles.
William Gallas – Chelsea
In 2006, he refused to play the FA Cup semi-final before failing to turn up for pre-season training. He even threatened to score own goals if lined up which prompted Chelsea to sell him to Arsenal with Ashley Cole going the other way.
