As well as reinforcing his supreme technical ability, the goal will also no doubt have left Barcelona fans everywhere left thinking about what might have been after the Catalans infamously bungled the signing of the playmaker just three years ago.
Asensio has been a Real Madrid fan since he was a child, but he almost turned to the dark side in 2014 when he was so close to joining Barca that he was already looking for a house in the area.
The fee that Real Mallorca were demanding for the youngster was a mere €4.5m but Barca started to dilly-dally and asked to pay the deal in installments, this allowed Real to steal in and sign the now 21-year-old the following January and the player has certainly not looked back since.
Few people are aware of it but Asensio could have represented Holland at international level. Asensio's full name is Marco Asensio Willemsen, with the Willemsen part coming from his late mother who hailed from Rotterdam.
Indeed, such are his Dutch roots that the former Real Mallorca man is named after former Dutch international Marco Van Basten.
Fans of the Spanish national team will be delighted that Asensio wound up representing them, with the player looking like having a long and prosperous career at the top level.
There is no easy path to the first team at the Bernabeu but after having featured fairly regularly last season, making 38 appearances in all competitions and scoring 10 goals in the process, Asensio will no doubt have his sights set on even bigger things this season.
The three-cap Spain international will be looking to cement his place in the national side ahead of next summer's World Cup, whilst he will also have his eye on a regular starting berth with Real.
You would have to say that at this moment in time, both of those aims look very achievable indeed.
